School Sport Professionals – Members’ Webinar 8
Esports & Alternate Programs For Associations
For our upcoming webinar on Thursday September 11th, we are delighted to welcome Nicky Barrie and Keira Rawlins from Queensland University of Technology (QUT), who will introduce us to the world of esports and share their knowledge and experience in how it can transform student engagement in school sport.
Esports can be more than just a competitive outlet. It’s a powerful way to engage more students in sport, foster digital literacy and build inclusive environments. From ensuring safe and secure networks to navigating school WiFi restrictions, we’ll explore many of the practical considerations schools and associations need to address in hosting esport competitions. We’ll also showcase different event models, from structured programs like the Sport Tech Challenge to short-term, game-specific tournaments that broaden participation.
Ultimately, esports is not about replacing traditional sport, but extending it – expanding pathways, participation, and the very definition of what school sport can be.
As a follow up to the esport presentation, the last part of the webinar will explore additional programs that school associations currently offer their students, or may be interested in exploring for future implementation. This could include music, debating, public speaking, chess, drama, STEM programs, leadership programs, etc. The content will be driven by member interest and discussion will focus on the sharing of ideas and resources.
