Today, School Sport Professionals hosted an informative webinar withย Nicky Barrie, Sport Operations Manager of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), who shared her expertise on the growing role ofย esports in schools. We thank Nicky for her time and for sharing some incredible insights on the QUT program.
Esports is emerging as much more than just a competitive gaming outlet. It offers schools and associations a unique way toย boost student engagement,ย foster digital literacy, andย create inclusive environmentsย that welcome a wider range of participants.
The session covered key practical considerations โ from managing safe and secure networks to overcoming school WiFi restrictions โ and highlighted a variety of event models. These include structured programs like theย Sport Tech Challenge, as well as shorter, game-specific tournaments designed to broaden participation.
Importantly, esports is not about replacing traditional sport, but about extending it โ opening new pathways, increasing participation, and expanding the very definition of school sport.
